This Weeks Adult Biblical Lesson — “Taking Things for Granted or Taking Them with Gratitude”

“When it comes to living, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude. – G. K. Chesterton.”

Chesterton’s words carry a quiet but piercing truth: the difference between a life that feels empty and a life that feels full often comes down to one simple posture — gratitude. Not the loud kind, not the dramatic kind, but the steady, daily choice to notice God’s goodness instead of assuming it.

Scripture teaches this same lesson again and again. Gratitude is not just a feeling; it is a spiritual discipline that reshapes how we see the world. When we take things for granted, our hearts slowly close. We stop seeing God’s gifts. We stop recognizing His presence. We begin to live as though blessings are normal and burdens are the only things worth noticing.

But when we take things with gratitude, everything changes.

Biblical Insight

Paul writes, “Give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Not for all circumstances — but in them. Gratitude is the act of acknowledging God’s hand even when life feels ordinary, routine, or difficult.

Jesus Himself modeled this. Before feeding the five thousand, He took the small offering of bread and fish — not nearly enough — and gave thanks. Gratitude preceded the miracle.

Gratitude opens the door for God to multiply what we have.

A Lesson for Today

Chesterton reminds us that the critical difference in living is not the size of our blessings but the posture of our hearts. Gratitude turns:

  • ordinary moments into sacred ones
  • small provisions into testimonies
  • daily routines into reminders of grace
  • burdens into opportunities to see God’s faithfulness

Taking life for granted shrinks our world. Taking life with gratitude expands it.

Encouragement for You

My friends, today I encourage you to pause and notice the gifts God has placed in your path — breath, friendship, Scripture, sunlight, strength for the day, and the quiet presence of Christ walking with you. Gratitude doesn’t ignore hardship; it simply refuses to let hardship be the whole story.

Choose gratitude, and you will begin to see God’s fingerprints everywhere.

Prayer

Dear Father, teach us to live with grateful hearts. Open our eyes to the blessings we overlook and help us recognize Your goodness in both the simple and the difficult moments. Guard us from taking life for granted, and shape us into people who receive every day as a gift from Your hand. May gratitude deepen our faith, soften our hearts, and draw us closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen 💕✌️🙏
