“Gratitude or Taking Things for Granted” Based on the quote by G. K. Chesterton
Today’s Thought
G. K. Chesterton once said, “When it comes to living, the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.” That’s a big idea, but it’s actually very simple: We can live each day thinking everything we have is “just normal”… or we can live each day thankful for every good thing God gives.
A Lesson Kids Can Understand
Imagine waking up and thinking:
- “Of course I have breakfast.”
- “Of course I have a home.”
- “Of course my parents love me.”
- “Of course God cares about me.”
When we think like that, we stop noticing how special those things really are. We start taking them for granted.
But when we choose gratitude, everything changes. Gratitude says:
- “Thank You, God, for my food.”
- “Thank You for my home.”
- “Thank You for people who care about me.”
- “Thank You for loving me every single day.”
Gratitude helps us see God’s gifts instead of ignoring them.
What the Bible Teaches
The Bible says, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good” (Psalm 107:1). God doesn’t ask us to be thankful because He needs it — He asks us to be thankful because we need it. Gratitude makes our hearts softer, kinder, and more joyful.
Jesus Himself gave thanks before He did miracles. He showed us that gratitude opens our eyes to what God is doing.
A Simple Example
Think of a flashlight. If you never turn it on, you walk in the dark. But when you turn it on, you can see everything clearly.
Gratitude is like turning on a flashlight in your heart. It helps you see God’s goodness all around you.
Encouragement for Kids
Today, try to notice one thing you usually forget to thank God for — maybe your lunch, your friends, your toys, or even the sunshine. Say, “Thank You, God,” and watch how your heart feels brighter.
Gratitude makes ordinary things feel special.
Prayer
Dear God, thank You for all the good things You give us every day. Help us not to take anything for granted. Teach us to see Your blessings and to say “thank You” with happy hearts. Make us children who notice Your love and share it with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen 💕✌️🙏
